As a professional church member (LOL!) I can tell you that just as Sunday School is a church staple, so is the infamous church hug!
Believe it or not, not everyone wants a big ole’ bear hug embrace. I know we big bear huggers mean well, but not everyone is here for it. So, what do you do? You choose which type of hug to extend.
Enjoy this short clip from my Radical Hospitality training where I begin to demonstrate the 5 Types of Hugs. During the session, I share with the leaders to:
- Use wisdom when it comes to hugging.
- Use discernment when it comes to hugging.
- Use brevity when it comes to hugging.
When it comes to using wisdom when hugging, I simply mean, be intentional about where you place your hands and be aware of the amount of force your hug bears. You don’t want the person to be made to feel uncomfortable though your intentions were pure.
When it comes to discernment, figure out who wants to be hugged and who would rater be greeted with a nod of the head or a handshake. And when it comes to strangers, ask them if they want to be hugged. I suggest you extend your hand and then tell them, I give hugs for free and watch their reaction!
And lastly, when it comes to hugging, be brief. Don’t hold the person so long that they feel like they are going to lose their breath.
